Hurry Up and Wait

It's an old army tradition to hurry up and wait so  I guess its appropriate for this hobby. In any event while my table upgrade is by no means finished, it is sufficiently along that I want to play a game to try it out. Before I play though there are a few things I want to do.

Royal Faraway Artillery trying out their new 9pdr Rifled Muzzle Loader. Obsolete by world standard but an improvement for them. You can shoot 1/2 way across the table with one of these suckers! (At least now that the there are fewer squares you can....)
40mm Scuby gun and crew.

I want to review possible rule modifications to take advantage of the larger units with more elbow room. This isn't necessary but I might as well take advantage of the chance to look at things before playing. Rules aren't the main delay though.

Ever since I casually put aside my Great War venture to stage an earlier Colonial train ambush game I have been inventing new Atlantican factions, wars and uniforms on the fly and improvising tabletop forces.

Now that I feel settled as to what the games will be like I want to spend a little time getting the units in play up to scratch and some time figuring out the 'historical' and geographic background, scenario options and by extension, uniforms, units and so on.  I'm not sure that everything I want to dabble in over the next 20 years will fit into the Atlantica  background but as long as the armies are small enough there will be room for historical or other fictional settings as well. I am especially keen on getting to some of the 'extras', bands, hospitals and so on.

The table needs a lot of work yet but it'll probably be done in dribs and drabs over the next year. Any vague resemblance between Marketown and Sawmill Village is due to me improvising modifications as the mood took me when laying out the scenario by memory.

Another 30 - 40 cm of snow, freezing rain and high winds forecast for Sunday until Monday so a Snow Day, but will I paint or play?

  1. Hi ROSS - do like Your Scruby 40mm 9ld Cannon and Royal Faraway Crew- splendid painting! Have a question for You - How wide is Your games Table? I'm interested to know this as my table is 5'6" x 13' and when I look at Your set-ups I do hope I will have near a simular space to Your Games table. Regards. KEV.p.s., I like the colour of Your gaming surface - the mottled effect of brown -green looks excellent.

    1. Thanks Kev, my table these days is a mere 5' x 6', down from 6x10 15 years ago. It has taken me a while to adapt but I have found ways to make it work for me.

    2. Thanks Ross - I was guessing that Your table was at least 6ft wide....being 5ft surprises me - it looks much larger in the photos ( guess it could be because of the way You have painted the surface)....I've been working on my 40mm Martians - should have something to show soon. KEV.

  2. Dear Ross,

I completely agree with kev - your table looks really good. But more than simple looks, your table looks like it is an inviting milieu for play and working out ideas.
The weather you are experiencing hit us some 12-18 hours ago but because we are a bit further south managed to manifest itself as a cold rain which wiped out the ice and snow piles which beset us. At least the bad weather gives us a chance to deal with important things like painting, building models, doing basing, etc.
    All the best,
    Jerry

    1. Thanks Jerry, still snow up this way, it must be heavier than it used to be since shovelling tends to take more of the starch out of me.

  3. You've done a good job with the grid - clear, but not obtrusive.
