For what it's worth I've settled on multi-figure bases for most of my armies. The only exception my SYW collection. The time saved was worth it. I found even with steel washers, figures managed to come off the magnetic material.
Thanks again for an exciting game report.

DonBrigadier Dundashttps://www.blogger.com/profile/09895480319665745589noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2839601747923375105.post-60989280888204392602011-09-14T19:14:34.301-03:002011-09-14T19:14:34.301-03:00Love it!Love it!Montyhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/06230149195753516430noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2839601747923375105.post-38735824815516711502011-09-14T14:06:46.217-03:002011-09-14T14:06:46.217-03:00Great looking battle ! exciting game !.Great looking battle ! exciting game !.Mosstrooperhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/08744308664219116701noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2839601747923375105.post-86593240054550346152011-09-14T08:39:21.564-03:002011-09-14T08:39:21.564-03:00Ross,

And about 20% are actually made of an iron allow and are attracted by magnets.

The "sheet magnets" that sign makers use (as well as the office supply "photo paper magnets") can be cut with scissors to make a good sabot base if affixed to some cardstock (they are too flexible just by themselves).

I put a strip of balsa around the sabot-base to aid in handling and to help keep the figures in place. Finally I paint it the same color as the figure bases (this doesn't affect the sheet magnet at all).

An idea for you anyway.

-- JeffBluebear Jeffhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/05171345165563779232noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2839601747923375105.post-12141071018633622142011-09-14T08:08:35.929-03:002011-09-14T08:08:35.929-03:00Bob, I have found that I can quite easily write a ...Bob, I have found that I can quite easily write a set of rules that can be easily used with either single figures or "elements" but like most compromises, some of the best aspects of each style are lost to achieve this.

I have been exploring the magnetic option off and on for 2 years with little success but I think I have it solved now which wil lmake life much easier!Ross Mac rmacfa@gmail.comhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/04053555991679802013noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2839601747923375105.post-80111104290207724002011-09-14T08:05:52.614-03:002011-09-14T08:05:52.614-03:00Jeff, Nothing has been selected or rejected yet, t...Jeff, Nothing has been selected or rejected yet, the test is just begun. You are right that faster is not always better, but neither is it always worse. Its also not strictly about the length of the game, its also about the size and style of "army" that the game is suited for. Detachments up to a brigade or armies of several brigades.

That said, I lack the patience to play games spread over many sessions so long games are best saved for those rare occasions when I can dedicate a full day to the matter in hand.

Good point about making it easier to track which side is which, esp since some units on opposing sides have similar names. I should have invented a foreign language for 1 side!Ross Mac rmacfa@gmail.comhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/04053555991679802013noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2839601747923375105.post-37159680814334474672011-09-14T03:11:55.211-03:002011-09-14T03:11:55.211-03:00Ross Mac,

I feel that in my case I will end up with a solution that suits me rather than one that suits other people ... and that is likely to be single figure bases that can be placed on some form of magnetic or sabot base so that they can be used for both types of wargame.

Good luck to you; I don't envy you the dilemma you are facing.

All the best,

BobRobert (Bob) Corderyhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/13109130990434792266noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2839601747923375105.post-51968967618006670862011-09-14T00:18:44.216-03:002011-09-14T00:18:44.216-03:00Ross,

I'm sure that I'm not the only one who doesn't recall which units belong to which side.

If you color-coded the units (red & blue text for their names) it would be very useful in keeping track of who is who.

An excellent account, by the way . . . and the photos are wonderful. So don't dismiss MacDuff because of the time it takes.

-- JeffBluebear Jeffhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/05171345165563779232noreply@blogger.com
