I became a modeller until I found Featherstone! It was a little hard on my small collection of Britain's and Crescents though. The cover depicts a highly animated wooden figure of a French Dragoon (modelled by a General Angenot). For mine it's really an eye candy book, not being into modelling for its own sake. Actually, I have two copies, but the dust cover of the other has long since vanished. Both were picked up umpteenth hand for a song...
Cheers,
IonArchduke Piccolohttps://www.blogger.com/profile/15533325665451889661noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2839601747923375105.post-31560820804103907002012-12-14T09:26:51.556-04:002012-12-14T09:26:51.556-04:00Jeff - wrong post - but "best of" for th...Jeff - wrong post - but "best of" for the chemo...Steve-the-Wargamerhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/07077311120172727690noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2839601747923375105.post-39070674216955360572012-12-14T09:25:39.576-04:002012-12-14T09:25:39.576-04:00I've had that very edition of Harris for what ...I've had that very edition of Harris for what must be over 35 years by now.... blimey... where does the time go???Steve-the-Wargamerhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/07077311120172727690noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2839601747923375105.post-48712340353298495842012-12-13T19:12:07.530-04:002012-12-13T19:12:07.530-04:00Mine was a linesman in Italy and Holland assigned ...Mine was a linesman in Italy and Holland assigned to the 5th Armoured Division.Ross Mac rmacfa@gmail.comhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/04053555991679802013noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2839601747923375105.post-37991834584193413112012-12-13T19:10:09.136-04:002012-12-13T19:10:09.136-04:00Oh yes certainly and even possibly in South Africa...Oh yes certainly and even possibly in South Africa with red serge and sun helmets but my troops are 1860's at the latest so flags are probably in, telegraph units certainly are but heliographs that early go along with steam tanks and things, technically possible but not historical.

But I think I know the picture you mean, my copy is near at hand along with Barnes books. As it's a tight bound paperback it doesn't copy too well, but the text reads - "the flags, which come in pairs, one blue and one white with a central blue stripe; depending on the nature of the background against which he would be seen, the signaller used a dark or light coloured flag. There were also two sizes, 2 feet square and 3 feet square and it was reckoned that messages sent with the latter could be read in England at a range of 5-7 miles.
Hope this helps.joppyhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/06334867727613848852noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2839601747923375105.post-41705723837307331262012-12-13T15:53:55.328-04:002012-12-13T15:53:55.328-04:00Interesting, Ross. I'm sure I've got something similar during the high point of the Volunteer movement - perhaps in the Blandford book on infantry uniforms that came out in the very early 1970s. I'll have to find it.AlFronthttps://www.blogger.com/profile/03309612957773750838noreply@blogger.com
