I think you will find OTR a fun ruleset. T...Ross,

I think you will find OTR a fun ruleset. The option to roll for effect to remove morale markers adds some interesting twists at times. Union artillery is also very powerful, possibly too powerful.

I put my Spencer Smiths away after running the game at Historicon four years ago and have not had them out since. I was disapointed by my rules and felt the the players had not had the best experience.

These days I am working on a RCW game. I am building forces to be able to run the Red Verdun scenario. I have most of the infantry completed. Whites are predominately: infantry Hat, cav Strelets R & Reds infantry metal, cav Orion and Strelets.

Most of the infantry is now completed and most horses are started. Lots of dashing cav to go. I had hoped to find a couple of dollar store trains, to add scratch build armor to, but thus far have had not luck.

Chris B.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2839601747923375105.post-73495704166612315842011-01-12T19:51:46.146-04:002011-01-12T19:51:46.146-04:00Chris! How are the Spencer Smiths?

I recently tracked down a copy of OTR, haven't tried them yet.

-RossRoss Mac rmacfa@gmail.comhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/04053555991679802013noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2839601747923375105.post-37219992580548874592011-01-12T17:31:48.665-04:002011-01-12T17:31:48.665-04:00Ross,

I enjoyed seeing your RCW posts and am enjoying seeing the Airfix ACW on the table. I started building up forces back in the early 90's for ON TO RICHMOND. Really enjoyed playing the rules, though with a friend's 6mm H&R figures.

Noticed you had your Yugoslavian Partisans on ebay. Hope you get a good price! They are very nice figures.

If you decide to move from your Strelets R figures to the new Zveda ones let me know. I would be happy to trade for some nicely painted Union figures by RSM.

Chris B.
brooksarpatcomcast.netAnonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2839601747923375105.post-65459379526182560512011-01-10T10:30:08.292-04:002011-01-10T10:30:08.292-04:00Thanks for the feedback Jeff. I think your choice ...Thanks for the feedback Jeff. I think your choice of TS&TF is sound. Larry knows how to write 'em. He kept the goal firmly in mind and they have thrived through decades of wide use. It was a real pleasure to me a few years back to face him across the table at a multi-player TSATF Sudan game at Cold Wars. A true gentleman and good sport who played the spirit not the rules and encourage the GM to play the game his way and not worry about Larry being there.

Conrad, they maintain it but as a friend keeps pointing out to me, postcard rules almost inevitably rely on all sorts of unwritten assumptions and tend to be narrowly focussed on what is needed for that 1 game.
So, now, if you can summarize the important rules on postcard QRS, that's close enough for me!Ross Mac rmacfa@gmail.comhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/04053555991679802013noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2839601747923375105.post-84964770627443006712011-01-10T08:04:29.454-04:002011-01-10T08:04:29.454-04:00Every game designer I've ever met who was wort...Every game designer I've ever met who was worth his salt maintained that back of a postcard rules are best.Conrad Kinchhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/15683395740934527502noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2839601747923375105.post-3293874555454202572011-01-10T01:54:14.694-04:002011-01-10T01:54:14.694-04:00Ross,
What I enjoy most about your accounts is no...Ross,

What I enjoy most about your accounts is not the details of the battle; but rather your responses to the rules.

Not so much the details of the rules as your comments on what you like/dislike and why.

Now I'm not looking at gaming the ACW, but general observations about any set of rules can have applications in other eras.

I'm looking at doing some British Colonial . . . and I'm looking at going back to "The Sword and the Flame" instead of using the rules that I wrote a decade or so ago when I was last playing Colonials.

Why? Well I think that TSATF is a good sound set of "cinematic" rules (and most folks are familiar with it) . . . and my rules were a bit overdone I think (and no, they weren't anything like the set that you played).

Anyway, I look forward to your comments and eventual comparisons of the other rule sets you use to play out this scenario.

-- JeffBluebear Jeffhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/05171345165563779232noreply@blogger.com
