As they say...so may games, so little time!Ross Mac rmacfa@gmail.comhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/04053555991679802013noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2839601747923375105.post-19224501742268945662012-07-15T08:52:29.740-03:002012-07-15T08:52:29.740-03:00Steve, on the smaller 6x5 table, 12 40mm cavalry i...Steve, on the smaller 6x5 table, 12 40mm cavalry in 2 ranks do take up enough real estate to give me pause but if I was starting from scratch I would probably go there but 6 of my 8 units were raised as 8+1 Charge! squadrons and the remaining 2 were built as 5x2 man stand Morschauser units. So going with 12 would mean updating all 8 units. I'm just too lazy to go back and try to match old units. I still might if I had the bigger table but I think the room to maneuver will be better than a few more figures on table and the smaller units are more vulnerable leading perhaps to a slightly more exciting game.

I like the card activation for this sort of TT game. It gives a nice balance between chance and control. I did worry that it allowed too swift a reaction in pitched battles but from a purely 'game' POV I suspect it is probably still a better option, something I hadn't really been considering.

Good catch on the firing questions. Hold fire implies waiting for an opportunity to fire as a reaction to enemy fire or movement. Defensive fire is replaced by 'Shooting in reaction to enemy movement'. I've added some verbiage to the Fire and Movement and the Charge Reaction rules to (hopefully) make that explicit. Clarity beats Obscurity.

The whole lifting of movement and timing restrictions on shooting was hard and required a fair amount of unclenching but while the restrictions seem intellectually more appropriate, time after time, removing them improves the flow and not only makes abetter "game" it also makes some aspects happen more realistically despite the implied inconsistencies. It certainly makes it easier for me to get the Plains of Abraham, Fontenoy and British line vs French column to all work!

ThanksRoss Mac rmacfa@gmail.comhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/04053555991679802013noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2839601747923375105.post-28258869996344145142012-07-15T07:04:42.250-03:002012-07-15T07:04:42.250-03:00Ross Mac,

I need to go back to them in the very near future and start using them again.

All the best,

BobRobert (Bob) Corderyhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/13109130990434792266noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2839601747923375105.post-3758417588863989612012-07-15T02:35:12.389-03:002012-07-15T02:35:12.389-03:00My own ambition would be to use HofT mainly for TT...My own ambition would be to use HofT mainly for TTTs. That would incline me towards having the light inf and cav units at exactly half-size; I wonder if there's an inhibiting factor at work with the 40mms, whereby 24-man infantry units seem manageable but 12-man cavalry units feel a bit overwhelming (in terms of tabletop space).

Regarding the 14th July draft, I'm happy with the card activation, it has worked well in the past. A couple of queries:

What does "hold fire" imply? It's mentioned in 4g and 4i. Is it an obsolete hangover from a reloading rule?

Defensive fire when charged isn't listed as a charge reaction, but in other places its continued existence is implied, so not sure on that one.

Thanks,
SteveSteve Gillhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/00784652695519954845noreply@blogger.com
