Another attempt at standardization has failed. The grid has some advantages BUT also some restrictions.
For example, my 1830-1850 armies were resurrected as 3 stand infantry battalions with each stand being a "company" (as in Charge! but 6 figures instead of 19!) with the expectation that the "companies" could form as a battalion or be detached to occupy a house or guard a bridge etc. Each of my squares hold 2 companies.......hmmm.... . Its easier to just treat each stand as a "unit" and forget battalions or to increase my battalions to two stand "wings" but somehow it all just wasn't satisfying, especially from the narrative point of view.
So, I've decided to go back to where I was last fall without the grid, but with the 3 stand infantry battalions. The table has been reset and the first turns played as the approaching columns arrive at various times, and begin to deploy.
Well, that was quick! How long since the conversion TO squares? Kidding a little, perhaps, but not criticizing. You're getting in more games than I am and I find the ability to do so while continuing to fine-tune the rules admirable.
ReplyDeleteMy 1st experiments with Squares/Hexes happened in 2010 when I was convalescing. Neither Grid nor Ruler have never managed a lasting, decisive, victory.
ReplyDeleteIn this case, I had recently reorganized/resurrected my 19thC 40mm armies and since off grid was ahead, I decided to use 3 stands per battalion. When I decided to try them on the grid, only 2 stands would fit in a grid square. Things started getting complicated with a prospect of work to bring units up to 4 stands so I decided to do the easy thing and just ignore the grid for these mobs. :)
I can see what you mean about 3 stand units - you can angle one to a flank, detach one, and still have a recognisable infantry line. I can manage it with my 15mm figures but anything larger and it needs larger squares which reduces the opportunities to maneuvre... It's a sort ot 'no-win, no-win' law of wargaming.
ReplyDeleteI think I've found a solution that will work when I "opened my mind" and "thought outside the box" (sort of). Basically allowing 3 stand infantry lines or columns to straddle two squares. The test game is about to start!
