Thinking Outside The Box

My brain often seems to solve problems better when I'm not trying.

In this instance, I was looking at the table, all set for an off grid game when I found my mind thinking something along the line of ”too bad I couldn't have a 3 stand battalion straddle 2 squares". Minutes later I thought ”yeah, why can't I?”. Minutes later........

3 or 4 stand infantry battalions straddle 2 squares.

......with a new version of the rules in hand, the test battle was underway. So far, so good.

  1. Why not indeed! I always get great inspiration from looking at your battlefields and this one is no exception.

    1. Thanks, my head is still adapting to the 1/2 size table but I'm getting there.

  2. It looks great until the battalion wheels 45 degrees left or right. Does it work better than just having bigger squares so that all 4 bases in line abreast fit into a single square?

    1. If I was starting from scratch or wanted to re-re-re-rebase the troops, I'd probably go with 40mm bases so they would all fit or repaint my table with 6" squares but I'm finally done with that! :)

Actually, it turns out that 3 stands facing at an angle can actually be adjacent to an enemy so that could work but I'm slowly bumping into a bunch of little things that have reminded me why I've dropped the grid several times over the last decade.

  3. I should confess that I have considered various grid systems, some with many small units in a big grid space up to large units that occupy more than one grid space (like your latest approach). I don't know the "best" answer if one even exists

  4. When I first tried grid's it was using @Square Bashing' (from PeterPig) which used 12" sqaures that held a number of units. ok, it was only 24 squares on a 6x4 table but as the units could cover front and flank it seemed to solve a number of the problems with grids. I've since moved to 6" grids but, as you mention, my units (of 4 bases) can fit into one grid square and/or be angled back along a flanking face and I find that works well.
