Well Sir? Are Your Sappers Done ?

Yes sir! Ready as ordered. You may commence your battle sir.
No more marking off one third of my table. The trials have been done and done, a decision has been made, tested, tested again, and again, confirmed, and finally carried out.

4'x4' or 9x9 5" squares with a narrow border

If/when I want a larger table for a special game or to test a convention game at home, I'll add a temporary extension.

Now for a game or three!

  1. That officer is a real dandy; love the feathers on his hat. What a beaut looking table.

    1. He is a recast figure I painted in the lat '90's, veteran of many a game.

    1. It is 4 foot x 4 foot down from 4.6" x 6". I've been playing a lot of games on this foot print to test it. I have a 4x2 piece to use for a temporary expansion when/if needed.

The extra 6" was added a year or so back to give me a 9 square depth for gridded games but having dropped to a 5" grid it was no longer needed.

  3. Can you tell us a little of the dismounted figures in the first photo, especially the fellows with binoculars or pad/pencil?

    1. The sapper in apron is a Ft Henry Guard figure (recast from Soldierpac in the '90's), the other sappers are Ft Henry Guard with axe arm instead of rifle. The Officer is a Ft Henry Guard with officers forage cap and binocular arms.

The sergeant is a figure I bought in Ottawa early this century but I don't know the make. I suspect he made have been sold as a kit (the base is not cast on but rather attached by pegs in holes) and there is no maker's mark) and painted by the guy I bought it from but it might be from one one of the smaller British firms, I forget now.

  5. Table looks great. Just shows what can be achieved with large figures in a small space - most inspiring! With a 5" grid I am guessing your troops must be very tightly based?

    1. Shoulder to shoulder like the drill book says. (3 figures on a 60mm wide base) Of course, this is rather Illustrated News stuff since these units would usually be relying a on loose firing line with supports when there was fighting to be done.

I like the stylised look of you table... very shiny toy soldier.

    All the best. Aly

    1. Thanks, no new troops, just a smaller table. The inspiration for the painted cloth was my childhood 30mm Marx Miniature playsets with painted figures on a printed paper battlefield.
