How Many ACW Figures Are Enough?

Obviously, more than I have. During the last game I noted that I really didn't enough  cavalry, especially dismounted cavalry. I was about to go shopping for compatible metal figures when I remembered about the Ukrainian company, Strelets-R.

The price of a single box of plastic soldiers isn't going to aid the war effort but I'm sure the company needs whatever sales they can get in hard times even if it's someone who retired  early on reduced pension (1/2 pay I call it) so I looked them up. The figures have arrived and I like them!  Just the thing.

 I like 'em!
(btw, there's 2 of each figure in the box.)

Of course, now my Reb cavalry is complaining about favoritism, so I suppose I'll need more. Alas, I can't seem to connect to their website. I'll blame our old Cold War enemy, after all they were THE enemy when I was born and when I first put on a uniform. Well, for now, I'll split 'em.

  1. Strelets-R are a great company with some fantastic figures. Unfortunately their main designer was killed in action.

    1. I'm sorry to hear that.
Some might say 'Hazards of war' BUT an awful shame and a waste of a life along with too many others, in a war that should never have been allowed to start, or to continue.

  2. I am currently painting ACW figures in 15, 20, 28 and 54mm scales. So in answer to the original question.... NEVER!

    1. Yup, done 15, 20 and 54mm but I've never owned a 28mm anything!
However, I did start painting up some Scruby 40mm ACW's once......then I shook my head and converted them for the Mexican War and Oregon Crisis ;)

  3. They will make a nice addition to your ACW armies.

  5. I agree with Matt - You can never have enough ACW figures - fullstop. Hopefully Airfix will rerelease their ACW sets one day ...

    1. They are old favourites but some of (not all) of newer releases are darned good and there are plenty of vintage airfix floating about.

  6. I am restrained by comparison with only 6mm and 15mm but your 20mm always tempt me…

    1. Apart from some WWII long ago, I don't "do" 6mm but I used to have loads of 15mm in various periods, back when I could see them!

  7. The term 'enough' doesn't really fit into a gamers mindset...

  8. It's a shame and a waste that the Strelitz figure designer has been killed in action. I've often admired the Strelitz figures particularly for their character. They make up the bulk of my Turcowaz and Izumrud-Zeleniya armies. I have also been admirer of the figures from their Russian rival company Zvezda, which now form my five Sengoku factions...

    1. Someone should have booked a certain person on battles with toy soldiers rather than people.

  9. Lovely figures. Their 1/72 WWI range of armies in gas masks are some of my favorite sets of figures.

  10. When they released theses, I bought 2 boxes: one to get blue paint, the other gray. I had to go to the dark side (metal) for horse holders. I'll be using the old Airfix US cab to make up the mounted numbers. I heard that Strelet's molds are essentially designed for one use, but then I saw something about them reissuing some sets.

    1. My existing cavalry range from old airfix acw and cowboys, and most later companies' cavalry set but most of my dismounts are converted infantry. Luckily my eyes aren't as sharp as the were :)

  11. I'm not sure I understand the question in the title....now there's a lie if I ever told one.

However, since I am building my sixth ACW collection (the fourth in 15mm) I will go on the record and say I'd rather answer my darling wife's questions about her hair, he shoes, or her clothing, instead of trying to rationalize how many figures... :-)

    1. I have no grief on that front. After all, toy soldiers don't bark, or need "someone" to feed them, put them out periodically, hang out with them etc etc.

  12. Sorry to change the subject, but any news on what's happening to PrinceMichael/Valiant?

    1. No, not yet I was planning briefly to take them to what passes for a local event (an hour's drive) in a few weeks time but my car is off the road indefinitely (waiting for parts) so I had to withdraw. Instead it'll be another solo game ere long.

( Unless I get an insane urge to try another live video feed hoping that my lighting is sufficiently better and that zoom will work better than the service I used. I'll post a call for volunteers well on advance if I do )
