EXCERPT FROM APPENDIX 1 from Don Featherstone's Battles With Model Soldiers
(The book that got me started.)

"Nothing in these pages is a dictate, no word says you must or you shall do it this way. On the contrary, the book sets out from the very beginning to stimulate the reader to think for himself, and to use what he has read merely as a foundation for efforts and ideas which reflect his own temperament and character. Only in this way will he obtain maximum satisfaction from the hobby of battling with model soldiers."

My actual introduction to wargaming

I just stumbled across these scans of a Canadian Boy Scout Magazine from the late 60's or very early 70's.  There is a paragraph or 2 missing and unfortunately, the original is also missing, but this was my first real glimpse beyond playing with toy soldiers and collecting model soldiers into wargaming (not to mention home casting.)

  1. Heart warming stuff - I find the reflexive "They're not toys" amusing. They are toys of course and bedamned to anyone who naysays playing with them.

  2. Wargaming is a "serious business"? Now you tell me.

  3. Gentlemen, if you have ever seen those charging Britain's highlanders in person, you KNOW they mean Business!
