At the Captain's Bed and Battle

Ahh the exciting potential of being young and starting a new life in a new city!

Luckily there is still much to be said for being middle aged and enjoying the company of long time friends and playing games.

That's me on the left. (sic)

After a pleasant  hour or so reviewing Rob's current armies (including some old friends), his painting table and lead pile, and accepting his offer of a painted 25mm Darius and a couple of Persian chariots as well as some spare back issues of the Courier, (best wargame magazine yet imho) we got down to it.

Rob's place is a traditional Montreal flat so no basement game room with an 8 foot long table but a nice big, comfortable kitchen table. While the fringes of Irene blew past us, we started off with Wings of War with Les & I ganging up on Rob. This was followed by 2 games of TransAmerica, a railroad boardgame by Rio Grande and last but not least, my first games of Hordes of The Things. These saw Rob & I team up against Les. Largely human 15mm armies on both sides, though Les's troops were a little more fleshy than ours.  I confess that I did enjoy these games.

 Out looking for new recruits.

Thank you Les for the invite to come along and thank you Rob for your hospitality.

  1. Sound like a splendid weekend of gaming, and a nice variety. Glad the storm missed you.

  2. Actually "Hordes of the Things" is, in my opinion, the best of the DBx games. And, as a bonus, the rulebook contains all the army lists you'll ever need . . . there are no expansions . . . and it is inexpensive to boot.

I'm glad that you had a good time and are safely back home, Ross.

  3. Sounds like you had a great weekend.

I tend to agree with Bluebear Jeff; HoTT is the best of the DBx games ... and very flexible in terms of the variants that can be created using it as a basis.

    All the best,

    Bob

  4. You'd never played HotT before? :o

  5. As Norman implies, it's a long time favorite here, and you can count me in the camp of feeling that it's the best of the DBx games. I didn't actually much care for DBA when it first came out, but liked Hordes immediately. Familiarity with Hordes eventually translated into more appreciation for DBA...

  6. You were more than welcome Ross. Feel free to drop in at the Captain's Bed and Battle again. There may be a business opportunity in that thought.

I very much enjoyed a chance to get in a few games with some long time friends, especially since I only get back to Halifax once a year or so.

  7. Yeah, sometimes the depth of my innocence is shocking. I played DBA when it was new and occasionally since but this was my first Hott. The differences (apart from the fantasy side) are small but the game seems somehow less rigid.

Anyway, I have some straggling 25mm Medieval figures and a few not quite historical personalities left over from long ago so I am thinking of setting up opposing forces so that they can all "have a home", another "game in a box" to provide a break and allow me to paint a few fantasy figures now and then without worrying about getting sucked into building a set of "real" armies.

  8. Ross,

On a whim some years ago I picked up a bunch of "Flintloque" figures (Napoleonics with Orcs, Elves, etc.) . . . and eventually I plan to make them into a HoTT army or two complete with hot-air balloons (I have some fake onions that will make great balloons).
