Not much progress today, too many outside Spring chores. At least we achieved a 2:1 majority decision (myself & I vs me) to go back to using 3 bases per unit (18 inf/6 cav) its not grid friendly but will work with several different rulesets and thats how the figures are painted so the least amount of work.
Of course some of the units were rebased for 2 stand, 16 figure, units (with 2 spares left over) and so will need to be brought back to standard.
Hi Ross- It is a good decision to go for 3 Bases of 6 figures each- I like the look of it in your sample photo.

DeleteAh yes the days of rebasing.
ReplyDeleteIs that a fender washer I see in the background?
Possibly, cheapest, easiest to get, magnet friendly individual bases for me to get for my final three individual collections.
DeleteIt has been great to have this decade to actually have the time to try various possibilities (including magnetic movement trays etc) and experiences the practical and aesthetic advantages and disadvantages rather than just thinking about them and forcing every collection into the same mode or sticking with choices, like it or not. Alas, the choices and explorations are done. The next decade is for completions and garnering the rewards then comes the wind down.
so you are keeping the fender washers as part of the minis base?
DeleteI use them for my Prince Valiant figures and for my French Revolution and Not Quite the 7Yrs War to conform with Rob's preexisting forces.
DeleteI like using 3 bases per unit for the simple reason that you can then put a command group on the centre base with 'ordinary' figures flanking it - it looks better than an offset command base if you use 4 bases per unit!
ReplyDeleteAgreed. Of course if you go with individual figures you can rearrange the officers, standards etc. (60 fig battalions are best but I ain't doing it anymore! Trays or no trays!)
DeleteLooking at Dave Gamer's comment below, I should really have said multiples of 3 rather than 3 as 6 bases make perfectly good squares - and as 2 deep it is effectively 3 bases wide, though I do use 3 bases per unit in Ancients for Sparabara units.
DeleteExcept that with 6 the colours are off centre again!
DeleteNot if they are (normally) used in 2 ranks... it may be that, for Napoleonics, the use of a single rank is only used for square, then it might be useful to use that system if a high enough proportion of games may result in a unit forming square. For most of my armies, most of my armies are on DBX bases, mostly 4 figures a base. For some figures they are double based - sparabara, some phalangite bases - for DBA most armies would be single ranks but I like to use 2 ranks for the look (you can do that happily when playing solo). So for me, the use of mainly single rank figures is generally useful in some cases, double rank useful in others - single rank gives me the best of both worlds. 6 bases of 4 gives my 'standard' unit of 24 figures... if they are 2 ranks deep, that's a 3 base frontage, command centre front.
DeleteI thought about the one deep option a fraction of after hitting the post button.I tried that with these lads a few years ago. Alot to be said for it.
DeleteI also like 3 bases (or an odd # of bases - like 5) so the command stand can be smack-dab in the middle. But how do you form square or attack column (as opposed to road column) with only 3 bases and make it look good?
ReplyDeleteCompromises, always there are compromises.
DeleteI find one can fudge a square with 3, not perfect but the intent is clear. I only have 2 answers for the columns leave spaces in a road column or go with an army/period where attack columns weren't used!
Ruleset agnostic basing is probably your best bet. I'm toying with the idea of going to DBx for my ancients, mainly for purposes of flexibility. I also have a forlorn hope of drawing the offspring into a game if it's simple enough.
ReplyDeleteOn this one, I've done all my experimenting over the last 13 years through various life changes and this is pure "for my pleasure (and the blog)" only so the rules will fit the chosen organization and basing.
